PARKING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

The University of Houston has several parking options for visitors:

PARKING OPTION #1:  Our first recommendation is to go to the Information Booth.  The Entrance 1 Information Booth is located on University Blvd. with the Entrance 4 Street intersecting in front of it.  It is right in front of the driveway area before you reach the University of Houston Hilton or the University Center, where the event is located.  Stop there and ask for a “Visitor Temporary Parking Permit.”  This permit will enable you to park in any student lot for the entire day for $3.00.  This permit does NOT allow you to park in any faculty, staff, or resident lot.

PARKING OPTION #2:  Our second recommendation is that you try to use the PARKING GARAGE.  The parking garage is located off of Entrance 4 on Entrance 4 Street right across from the Information Booth on the left.  The first two levels of the parking garage are reserved for visitors.

When you drive up to the parking garage, you will push a button and receive a ticket.  You will then park.  Once parked, you will go to the first level and exit through glass doors that say “Parking Payment.”  You do not have to pay at that time.  However, make sure that you keep your parking ticket with you. When you are ready to leave the campus, take your parking ticket to either the “parking cashier” or to one of the payment machines.  If you use a machine, you will need to put your ticket into the machine.  It will then tell you how much you owe.  You can pay either using cash or a credit/debit card.

Their pricing is as follows:

30 minutes – 1 hour - $2.00

1 hour – 1 ½ hours - $3.00

1 ½ hours – 2 hours - $4.00

2 hours – 2 ½ hours - $5.00

2 ½ hours – 3 hours - $6.00

3 hours – 3 ½ hours - $7.00

Over 3 ½ hours (all day) - $8.00

PARKING OPTION #3:  Our third recommendation is to park in the University of Houston Hilton’s underground garage.  The Hilton is located right across the street from the University Center on Entrance 4 Street.  They have underground parking available for $6.00 for the entire day.

Other options include parking at meters, but this can get expensive and time-consuming, as you would have to go out and keep feeding the meter when your time has expired.  There are also GATED VISITOR LOTS available in Lot 16F off of Entrance 16, and Lot 15G located in from of the Athletic/Alumni Building.

If you have any additional questions, please call the following numbers:

City of Houston Taxicab Fare Information

The City of Houston has a flat rate of $6 for taxi rides that originate and end within the Central Business District, which is the downtown Houston area bounded by I-45, I-10 and US 59. Up to four passengers can share a cab ride - and the cost of the $6 fare! For more information, please see http://www.houstontx.gov/downtowncab/index.htm

The City of Houston regulated taxi meter rate is $2.50 for the first 2/11 mile, and $0.17 for each additional 1/11 mile ($4 for the first mile and $1.87 for every mile thereafter). People 60 and older receive a 10% discount on fares. Waiting is calculated on the taxi meter at $0.33 per minute ($20.00 Per Hour). There is an additional $1 surcharge on all trips which commence between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Please note: Drivers are independent contractors. They are not employed by a cab company; they work for themselves. Tips are at the discretion of the customer.

Special note about Houston airport taxi service: trips to and from Houston airports are determined by zone rates, in accordance with Houston City Ordinance. Passengers are charged the flat zone rate or the meter rate, whichever is less.

Additionally, there are at least 30 "hailing cab" icons on various downtown streets, which mark that particular site as a three-minute zone where taxis can briefly stop to pick up and drop off passengers.

Hotels Located Near Conference Site

The National Black Pre-Law Conference does not have one specific host hotel.  Attendees are free to stay at any hotel within their budget.  As a courtesy, we have provided a partial listing of possible accommodations that you may want to choose.  You should feel free to do an Internet search to find the hotel that best suits your individual tastes and budgetary needs

However, we do have "recommended hotels" at negotiated special rates with MainStay Suites (Medical Center - Old Spanish Trail) and Residence Inn by Marriott - Medical Center.  These hotels were chosen because they are quality establishments that are close to the University.  Because they are "suites," they can accommodate small groups of students who may want to room together to cut costs. All suites have kitchens or kitchette facilities, desks, Internet access, and sleeper sofas that fold out into beds.

When you call, ask for the "National Black Pre-Law Conference" room block.
