   Message from Conference Chairperson

Dear Aspiring Black Lawyer:

I am elated to invite you to The Third Annual National Black Pre-Law Admissions & Preparation Conference and Law Fair 2007 at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas on Friday, November 2, 2007.  This event is designed to educate and empower you so that you will learn what you need to know to be a competitive applicant, be prepared for the challenging law school experience, understand what it takes to pass the bar exam, gain insight about how to gain legal employment or create your own opportunities after law school, and learn about the different types of work that attorneys do. We want to see you succeed and this conference was created to impart the encouragement and guidance you need to do just that!

This exciting conference will feature over 20 workshop sessions and panel discussion options featuring more than 70 law school admissions professionals, administrators, deans, law professors, law students, judges, and attorneys.  What an unparalleled opportunity to gain powerful knowledge and network!

In addition, we will also be conducting the individualized Law School Admissions & Preparation Help Clinic which will provide you with the opportunity to talk one-on-one with a pre-law advisor, law student, or attorney about your individual admissions credentials or personal concerns about getting ready for the demands of life as a law student.  Be sure to bring your resume, polished personal and diversity statements, transcripts, and list of questions.

We have also scheduled a Law School Recruitment Fair, which during the past two years has attracted over 100 law schools.  The law schools in attendance are demonstrating their commitment to diversity and desire to increase African American representation in their classes by being in attendance to talk specifically to you – the African American law school aspirant.  Do you have a lot of schools you want to check out?  You don’t have to worry about missing anything at the conference because nothing else will be going on during the time set aside for the law fair.

This year’s conference will feature first-class keynote speakers who want to share their time, experiences, and insight with you.  Listen and learn.

The day will end with a professional networking social/mentorship mixer where we are encouraging attorneys to come out and mingle with you for the purpose of providing you with invaluable networking opportunities so that relationships can be started which could result in mentorship and even internship possibilities.  Bring  your business/contact cards and be ready to ask for them.

I became interested in law school as a teenager and it would have absolutely meant the world to me to be able to attend an event where I could actually have met and interacted with Black attorneys, and learned the truth about what I need to do to become a lawyer, not just the mechanical factors, but the realities of what would be required of me and what to expect.  This is the type of “dream event” so many of us wish we would have had access to so we wouldn’t have had to learn everything the hard way.  If you are seriously interested into exploring the possibility of law school, you should definitely take full advantage of this wonderful and unprecedented opportunity!  Trust me, opportunities like this don’t come around every day, so make it a point to be there.

Do you think law school is the right move for you?  It may or may not be.  You now have the chance to make an informed decision.  Get your questions answered and find out during a full day of inspiration, encouragement, information-sharing, tough love, networking, and empowerment.  And no one in attendance will assume that you can't do it based on negative statistics because you are an African American!  To the contrary, we encourage a warm, family-like environment and are all pulling for you!

Don’t put this off until next time.  Sign up while seats are still available, because when registration closes you won’t have this chance until we convene again next year.  Register today!  And when you come, be prepared to be fully engaged in every aspect of this event.  Make the most of every single workshop, panel, and connection you make.  Just one piece of insight might turn on a light bulb, and one person can end up making a major difference in your life, so don’t take any encounter, meeting, or conversation for granted.  You don't know what another person knows or who they know that can help take you to that next level.

We can’t wait to see you in Houston for what promises to be a truly rewarding and life- changing experience for those who intend to and actually do take advantage of all the Black Pre-Law Conference experience has to offer.  We’re looking forward to seeing you in November!  I hope to meet you personally and can’t wait to hear of your future success after having attended this powerful event.

Best and sincere regards,
